CHAPTER 20

TOL

Tol’s mind was consumed with their impending fight with the Supernal. He was utterly unprepared for the mob of Chosen who surrounded him the moment he stepped outside.

“Prince Tolumus, how are you going to save our people?” a scholar asked.

“Can’t you just turn the Supernal’s brain into porridge?” someone else asked.

Soon, all of the Chosen were shouting at Tol, demanding that he use his infinite power to end the Supernal and save their people.

“And then you’ll blood marry the Fount,” said Flagillian.

Flagillian was a slightly-less-greasy version of his brother, Migelian. Tol had personally killed Migelian after he had Influenced Addy, back when they’d crossed paths in D.C. It felt like forever ago.

Tol gritted his teeth. He didn’t have time for this conversation right now. The Chosen, though, didn’t seem to care. They weren’t going to back off until he’d done something spectacular. Or told them the truth.

Tol put up his hand to quiet the crowd.

“I no longer have the power you’re hoping to see,” Tol said. He forced himself to meet their shocked gazes.

Gerth’s shoulder brushed against his left side while Addy took his right hand, lacing their fingers together.

Bolstered by their presence, Tol continued. “I gave it up for a future with Adelyne.”

He turned to look at her. She smiled at him before squeezing his hand.

“Rest assured that you will have a new king and queen before the month’s end,” Tol continued. “But—” He forced himself to stand straight. “I am not your future king.”

Silence stretched while the Chosen processed his words.

“Weakling prince,” Flagillian said into the quiet.

Tol flinched before he could stop himself.

“He fought the gods and bent them to his will, you bloody idiot,” Gerth said. “He’s already proven his strength a thousand times over.”

“You betrayed all of us for that piece of Forsaken arse?” Flagillian demanded. He looked Addy up and down. He licked his lips. “But then, your blood was sweet. Give us another taste, lovey.”

Tol’s vision went white.

The crowd scattered as two steps brought Tol’s sword against Flagillian’s throat.

“A quick death is more than you deserve,” Tol said, “but I don’t have time to linger.”

“Tol, it’s not worth it,” Addy said, tugging his arm down. “We have bigger fish to fry.”

“The Supernal’s what matters right now,” Gerth added, when Tol didn’t back down. “We need to go before any more innocents die.”

Tol forced in a calming breath. He pointed his sword at Flagillian in both a warning and promise before sheathing it.

“Look at you,” Flagillian scoffed, emboldened once there was no longer a blade against his skin. “Must be kind of hard to play at Forsaken when you’re a one-armed freak.”

Tol froze.

Addy moved. Her arm slashed through the air. Blood sprayed.

Flagillian let out a wet, choking cough. Addy yanked the point of her shears out of his neck and let him slide to the ground.

She ignored the man who was bleeding out at her feet. She glared around at their shocked audience.

“This is what will happen to anyone who insults Tol,” she said in a strong voice.
